Nitrates in Northern Nevada
Well Water
The primary inorganic nitrates that contaminate drinking water are potassium and ammonium nitrate — both widely used in lawn and garden fertilizers. Most nitrogenous materials in natural waters eventually convert to nitrates, so all sources of combined nitrogen — particularly organic nitrogen and ammonium — should be considered potential sources of contamination.
High-risk areas in our service region:
- Lyon County agricultural areas (Dayton, Yerington, Fernley)
- Spanish Springs — testing at the 10 ppm EPA limit
- Any property near farms, ranches, or feedlots
- Older or shallow private wells
- Areas near golf courses or landscaped developments
Why private wells need extra attention: Private wells supply 15% of Americans with drinking water — and these wells are not subject to EPA regulations. It is the responsibility of the well owner to maintain and test their water. Many Northern Nevada wells with nitrate issues also have elevated arsenic — our free water test screens for both simultaneously.
